Keyboard shortcuts

These are the default shortcuts. Most menu commands can be changed; see Change a shortcut.

Open Settings → Keyboard Shortcuts: on a Mac it’s a tab of Pincer → Settings…, and on iPad it’s a page of Settings. It isn’t on iPhone. Every command that can have a shortcut is listed by menu.

  • Record a shortcut: click the shortcut next to a command, then press the new keys. It needs ⌘, ⌃ or ⌥, or a function key. Pincer’s menus are paused while you record, so you can type a combination Pincer already uses.
  • Remove a shortcut: while recording, press ⌫. Or right-click the shortcut and choose Clear Shortcut.
  • Cancel recording: press Esc or click elsewhere.
  • Reset one: click the reset button next to a changed shortcut, or right-click it and choose Reset to Default.
  • Reset all: click Restore Defaults at the bottom of the list.

Changes apply straight away to the menus, buttons, command palette and tips, in every window. New demo replies also show your current Command Palette and Find in Chat shortcuts. Clearing either shortcut leaves action guidance without advertising the old keys.

If another Pincer command already uses the keys, Pincer asks before moving the shortcut to the new command; the other command is left without one. Shortcuts macOS or the standard menus need, such as ⌘ Q, ⌘ C, ⌘ ,, ⌘ Space and ⌘ 1–9 (pinned chats), can’t be used. For keys other apps commonly take system-wide, such as ⌘ \ (1Password) or ⌃ ↑ (Mission Control), and for your Quick Capture shortcut, Pincer warns you first. A warning triangle marks two commands that share a shortcut.

Edit Last Message, Regenerate Last Reply, Bookmarks…, Swap Chats, Add Gateway…, Next Gateway and Previous Gateway (under Chat and Gateway) have no shortcut by default; give them one here. ⌘ 1–9 open pinned chats, so they can’t switch gateways.

Show/Hide Sidebar (⌃ ⌘ S) is in the View menu. On iPad it’s listed as Toggle Sidebar and can be changed. On a Mac it’s the system’s own menu item, so it isn’t listed and its keys can’t go to another command. It’s also in the command palette. On iPad, when the sidebar is hidden, the Show Sidebar button at the top left of the chat brings it back.

Quick Capture’s shortcut works from any app, so it’s set separately in Settings → General → Quick Capture. New demo replies show that shortcut while it is enabled, or point to the menu while it is off. The picker’s ⌘ J and Tab keys are fixed.

On the message search page, Esc goes back to the palette only when you opened it from there. Opened with ⇧ ⌘ F or from the sidebar, it closes.

With keyboard focus in the sidebar, Up and Down move through chats and section headers. Focusing a header keeps the current chat open. Left collapses a focused header, Right expands it, and Return toggles it. Type + (Shift and the plus key) on a header with a + action to open its contextual New Chat action. The app’s customizable New Chat shortcut still works normally.

Previous Message and Next Message move to the neighboring message in the focused chat and can be changed in Keyboard Shortcuts settings. On macOS they also move keyboard focus into the transcript, with a focus ring on that message. The rest work there while the transcript has focus. See Accessibility.

Return sends on a Mac and on iPad or iPhone with a hardware keyboard; on iPad it’s listed as Send when you hold ⌘. On the on-screen keyboard it starts a new line instead. See Sending messages.

Dictation is in the composer guide. It works on iPad with a hardware keyboard, and toggles the pane you’re using in split view.

On macOS, Reply to Last Message is also in the Edit menu. See Replying to a message.
